The Mangekyō Sharingan is an advanced form of the Sharingan that has only been activated by a handful of Uchiha. They are noted to be the "heavenly eyes that see the truth of all of creation without obstruction". The Mangekyo Sharingan is the evolved form of the Sharingan which is awakened when the user suffers a trauma from the loss of a loved one. After the evolution, the Sharingan changes its pattern, which is exclusive to the user.
Here’s how each weilder of the Mangekyō Sharingan awakened it.
9. Fugaku Uchiha
Fugaku Uchiha was a weilder of the Mangekyō Sharingan, according to Itachi Shinden and the anime. He kept his Mangekyō Sharingan a Secret from everyone because he feared they would force him to control the Nine Tails.
Apparently, he awakened it in the Third Great Ninja War, where he witnessed the death of his comrade, who gave his life to save him.
8. Indra Ōtsutsuki
Indra Ōtsutsuki was the son of the Sage of Six Paths. He was a weilder of the Sharingan, as he inherited the Physical Prowess of his father. He managed to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan too. In the anime, he achieved this by killing two of his close friends, in order to gain power to fight his brother, Asura. In the manga, it is unknown how he achieved this feat.
7. Obito Uchiha
Obito Uchiha awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan during the Third Great Ninja War. Obito witnessed the death of Rin Nohara at the hands of his best friend Kakashi Hatake. He instantly awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan, went berserk and killed every Shinobi who was near him.
6. Shisui Uchiha
Shisui Uchiha was one of the few people in Konoha who possessed the Mangekyō Sharingan. He awakened it in the Third Great Ninja War, where he witnessed his friend’s death, and could do nothing to save him.
5. Izuna Uchiha
Izuna Uchiha was the brother of Madara Uchiha. He was a prodigious ninja, even among the Uchiha. He was one of the first Uchiha to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. To awaken it, he killed his best friend, in order to gain more power and help his brother lead the clan one day.
4. Madara Uchiha
Like his brother Izuna, Madara was a special kid. At a young age, he was able to kill several adult Senju without even awakening the Sharingan. Later, in order to gain power, he killed his friend to obtain the Mangekyō Sharingan. The result was that Madara successfully became the leader of his clan with his unmatched powers.
3. Kakashi Hatake
Kakashi Hatake received his Sharingan from Obito Uchiha during the Third Great Ninja War. He awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan in the same war. Kakashi managed to same a kidnapped friend in Rin, who was also made the Jinchuuriki of the Three Tails, which was sealed into her in order to go rampaging in the Hidden Leaf. Rin felt she shouldn’t go back to Konoha, so, as Kakashi was fighting the pursuers, she willingly jumped in his path, inky to get pierced through the heart. Kakashi immediately awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, but passed out due to the trauma.
2. Sasuke Uchiha
Sasuke Uchiha awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after his fight with Itachi Uchiha, where he witnessed his death. According to Sasuke Shinden, he didn’t awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan until two weeks after the incident. But, after hearing the truth about Itachi, he knew what he truly felt about Itachi, which led to the awakening of his Mangekyō Sharingan.
1. Itachi Uchiha
Itachi Uchiha was the first person in Naruto Series who was revealed to have a Mangekyō Sharingan. He awakened it when Shisui gave his life for the sake of the Village and entrusted the rest to him. After witnessing his death, Itachi immediately awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, which helped him to stop the Coup d’etat against Konoha.
